Natural, ethically-sourced pozzolans for the low-carbon concrete sector

INTRODUCTION

Concrete infrastructure is an inseparable component of modern civilization. It is the essential material in civic infrastructure and without it, the housing, transport infrastructure, hospitals, industrial and commercial buildings enjoyed by a modern society could not exist.

So far as the growth and survival of human societies are concerned, concrete is an essential component. As a foundation and building block of long lasting, low cost and reliable infrastructure, concrete delivers unparalleled performance for the ever increasing urbanisation and industrialisation of society.

Sand is the most exploited natural resource in the world after water, but global trading remains largely unregulated. According to the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) sands cannot be replenished from our terrestrial, riverine and marine environments in the quantities and timescales needed to meet demand from a world of 10 billion people.

Global sand consumption for use in concrete and manufacturing has tripled over two decades to 50 billion tonnes a year, harming rivers and coastlines and even wiping out small islands.  Such is the crisis, organisations like Levin Sources are showing leadership with insightful publications that give guidance on the  responsible sourcing of sand.

The scarcity of sand supply has also resulted in an array of bad actors, all vying for their sand stake.  A recent article entitled Granules & Geopolitics: Conflicts over Sand    paints a very worrisome picture of the global geopolitics surrounding sand.

At PozzEco, we target the environmental impacts of the sand and concrete industry without adversely impacting society and future growth.

The UNEP estimates that construction consumes roughly 40 to 50 billion tons of sand annually, but the shortage of natural sand deposits consistent in both quality and quantity, is forcing the construction industry to secure larger remote deposits.

The global construction value chain needs to address this resource anxiety with effective policy, planning, regulation and management.  To address this, the UNEP have set in action a roadmap to global sand regulation.

We will continue to work with policymakers, academia and industry technicians to create a transparent, regulated sand market to ensure this rare and vital resource is managed sustainably for the environment and future generations.

Cement and concrete production create significant carbon emissions seriously impacting the industries’ low carbon targets.

‘Green’ or low carbon concrete mix designs currently specify the use of PFA and GGBFS as SCM’s. These industrial by products come from heavy emitting sectors, are diminishing in quantity globally and being toxic, they are difficult to transport, store and process.

PozzEco understand the dilemma facing the value chain, and align the global cement industries targets (as laid out by the GCCA charter) with the procurement objectives of national, regional and local civic infrastructure projects.

PozzEco have already identified regions and projects aspiring to reimagine the cement and concrete supply chain (Europe, U.S., MENA).

Our Pozzolanic Sand

PozzEco (via our partners) have access to a cost-effective and abundant alternative to river and marine sand, and are mandated to supply an accountable, certified, assayed, green-mined 2 BN tonne reserve of silica.

As a ‘raw’ aggregate the silica is suitable for a wide array of construction applications, but with processing and beneficiation the sand has pozzolanic properties and can therefore be utilised as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), reducing the amount of cement and eradicating the need for toxic fly ash and other high carbon industrial bi-products and chemical additives.
Benefits of PozzEco pozzolans in concrete:
    • Reductions in embodied carbon (low carbon concrete)
    • Between 20-40% replacement of cement by weight
    • 100% replacement of PFA and GGBFS
    • Reduced water usage
    • Improved product durability and longevity
    • Increased corrosion and sulfate resistance
    • Decreased permeability and absorption
    • Reduced alkali-silica reactivity
    • Reduced need for chemical admixes
    • Excellent ‘end of life’ / circularity properties

Green Concrete

Combining PozzEco pozzos, technology and processes into bespoke mix designs to achieve performance related concrete and mortar applications for a wide array of outcomes.

    • Marine
    • High temp/pressure industrial (nuclear, waste plants etc)
    • Runways, Highways and flood mitigation
    • Renders and mortars
    • Precast
    • Soil stabilisation, GEO

Our Technology

PozzEco will utilise the following innovative techologies to maximise the performance of our green concrete:

    • CCUS – sequestration and utilisation of captured emissions
    • Nano technology
    • Low emission mining and transport methodology
    • IoT - Plug and play for thermocoupling, wired temp and maturity tracking
    • Decarbonise kiln technologies
    • Carbon as a service – Monitoring, verification and reporting of emissions in the chain, accurate disclosure and carbon credit transactions

Circularity

At PozzEco, we believe in designing for recyclability from day one.

This involves LCA’s and EPD’s from cradle to cradle. Recycle, recover and manufacture pozzolans from crushed concrete, asphalts and aggregates.

Zero waste.
